Ethiopia: Donor Aid Supports Repression


The Ethiopian government is using development aid to suppress political dissent by conditioning access to essential government programs on support for the ruling party, Human Rights Watch said in a report released today. Human Rights Watch urged foreign donors to ensure that their aid is used in an accountable and transparent manner and does not support political repression.

Sakharov Prize 2010: three finalists

Israeli NGO Breaking the Silence, Cuban dissident Guillermo Fariñas and Ethiopian opposition leader Birtukan Mideksa are the three shortlisted finalists for the 2010 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought. The winner will be announced on Thursday, 21 October, by the President of the European Parliament, following a decision of the Conference of political group leaders. The winner will receive €50,000 and will be invited to participate in the award ceremony on 15 December, in Strasbourg.

Ethiopian Birtukan Mideksa, S&D nominee for the 2010 Sakharov Prize


The Group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament will nominate Ethiopian activist Birtukan Mideksa for the 2010 Sajarov Prize next Tuesday, 5 October.  The candidacy of Ms. Mideksa, an Ethiopian prisoner of conscience, was adopted with unanimity at the S&D Group Meeting.

THE BBC brought the 1984 Ethiopian famine to the world's attention. The outcry in richer countries at the starvation of hundreds of thousands of people led directly to Band Aid, Live Aid, and a punchier approach to humanitarian aid. An investigation published last week by the BBC claims to have discovered that nearly all of the aid money handled by the Marxist rebel Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF), which then controlled northern Ethiopia, was spent buying arms to fight the Soviet-backed dictatorship of Mengistu Haile Mariam
